Netloan Wi-Fi - How It Works

The Netloan Wi-Fi software is unique since it links directly into your ILS borrower database. This gives libraries unprecedented control over their Wi-Fi users' access. Below are some of the optional restrictions and configurations that can be used to tailor your Wi-Fi network to meet the exact needs of your library.

Restricting the use of the Wi-Fi network

You can restrict the use of the Wi-Fi network in two ways:

  • By Library User group
  • By Library Site / Branch

Restrictions by user group

There are two sets of restrictions for Wi-Fi that work based on the library user group:

  • Wi-Fi access - This controls if someone is allowed to use the Wi-Fi network or not. The options here are Always, Never or Subscription. Setting to subscription allows a library to charge for access to the Wi-Fi network.

  • Wi-Fi restrictions - These control how often someone can login to the Wi-Fi network and how long they get for each session. You can set maximum sessions allowed per day/week/month for these users.

Any Wi-Fi restriction set here will apply for the user at all Sites in Netloan. Therefore, if you only allow one session per day in the User group, once someone has used your Wi-Fi network they won't be able to do so again until the next day, even if they travel to another site. If you want different Sites to have different restrictions, you will need to set your restrictions by site.

Restrictions by site / library branch

The restrictions that can be set for a site or specific library branch are as follows:

  • Wi-Fi Max sessions/day, max sessions/week and max sessions/month - These control how many Wi-Fi sessions a user may have in the given time period. A session is counted as the period between logging onto the Wi-Fi network and logging off. It doesn't matter how long the period was or whether the user logs off manually or automatically.

  • Wi-Fi Max minutes/session - This controls the maximum length of a Wi-Fi session that Netloan will allow. If someone tries to use the Wi-Fi network for longer than this period Netloan will ask the user to login again. Providing the user hasn't reached any session limit they will be able to continue to use the Wi-Fi network once they have logged in again. These are the same restrictions that can be set at the User group level. However, these restrictions will only apply to this Site.
